Informaţii generale despre Bunul samaritean – Good Samaritean

Webdesign, software development and the client relationship

This article is not about scripts and seo guides and software code that might help you improve your web experience. This article is about another experience that’s very close related with the web: the client experience. I mean the relation that’s created between the guy or the lady that want some web project (whaterver that is) and the team that work on that (let’s consider that a team of one is still a team ).

One of the aspects of my work is this clients relationship (it’s more than a dialog, an exchange of information – in time it might become a real business relationship if it’s too long). In time I’ve watch other people reaction about the subject and two very common problems are that the people does not know what they want and they are not educated, the does not have “the web culture”. I’ll start with the second problem because the first one is something personal, it depends to every person’s mind.

This article is about people, the beneficiaries, not about their products. It’s rather easy to read some emails from the dedicated services (yahoo, gmail and a lot of other companies that offer this), it’s rather easy to search with any available search engines (google, yahoo) and to acces some web pages – these kind of things are not hard to learn for a beginner / unexperienced users. With proper training in only few days, less than one week, one person can become an expert in reading mails and search for keywords. Being a consumer of some social networks is the next step for an internet user, they might move some time in that area until he/she finally understands it.

None of these make somebody an expert with the web culture. The beginners can understand a few things about the web, they can get some tricks how to use it better, but it takes some months or perhaps years to understand how the web really works… that’s what I understant in “the web culture”.

Being a web designer and/or a project manager it’s not easy. When you get clients that know the steps necessary to create a web page, a web project or a custom software (for example) or they have strong web culture it’s a piece of cake to do your job. The problems begin when you work in the field and you’ve got a beginner or the kind of guy/chick that can’t make up his mind… and trust me, you JUST DON’T WANT something like that. A simple project that can be done in a few days is sometimes finished in weeks or months after you’ve started the work. I’ve met people that said let’s do this and that (just a few things in general) and the team had to guess what he actually wanted. I’ve also met guys that surfed the internet after ideas about their webpage, they wanted something and later, every few other days, they wanted something different because they saw something interested or shiny. I’ve met people that have got a

Every time these guys had to be told how the things really works, they had to be thought about the steps of a projects, they had to be educated about the “web culture” (the way the internet works).

You might have met some guys like these in your life time, somewhere around the globe. There are lots and lots of them. You may be one of them and you found this article by accident… and there is no problem in that. It’s ok. If you understand this it is very good, it’s an important step to learn about the tools you are using to get your life better. We can provide this… the tools and the expertise. Contact us.

Open source versus license versus custom software

Logo Open Source Initiative
Image via Wikipedia

The debate about open source software versus licensed software is so old that I don’t think I can bring something new and relevant to that. It has been said almost anything that could be said and both side has it’s “fanatics” that are sure that their way is the best way to do.

The open source software is a computer software that is available in compiled form (when necessary) and in source code form, some copyrights reserved for the creators of the code are provided under a software licence that permits users to study, change, improve and sometimes to distribute the software. Some open source licence are gathered under the Open Source Definition and others are available within the public domain.

All the rights to a software code is reserved to their creators, that rights are changed when the owner gives them up (open source code) or sell the code (based on a legal contract to create custom software or just to buy an already existing piece of software). A licence is a legal instrument governing the usage or redistribution of the software, a typical licence grants an end-user permission to use one or more copies of the software in ways where such a use would otherwise constitute copyright infringements.

As a software engineer, a webdesigner and an end-user I had to deal with open source and licensed software as well. Usually I rely a lot on the open source software (Linux distributions, Open Office and others, including several tools to get work done), but there are moments when I pay gladly for the licences (I still need a copy of Windows to test stuff, there also are a lot of software that deserve their money several times over).

From my personal point of view, the best part of these two distinct ways to deal with the software code is that you can start a project from scratch (and get your money when delivering to the customer), but also you always can get the open sources and start customizing them to fit the requirements (it’s faster, but you are selling a service, not the code itselft and there are not so many financial benefits from that in a single project). Either way, the client gets what she/he wants and everybody is happy (or they try to be). That’s why I say that the licence software as we know it is slowly dying, nobody will be interested to buy something that does not have attached a period of support and maintenance or even improvements (as a clause in the development contract). This might stop the opposition to the open source software as they (the open source and the licence software) will emerge into services, not just some delivered code.

Web design and seo services

Image via Wikipedia

Do you want a web page or a web application? Excelent. Do you have a webdesigner or a web company to create your application? Good. Use them. What about the promotions of your product on the internet after delivery? Usually, the page is realease and that’s all, the webdesigner’s job is done and it is your bussiness to get somebody to promote your page or application and to get it well-known.

It’s the year 2011 Christian era and I started creating pages (professionaly speaking) about 7 years ago. I’ve picked up some stuff about search engine optimization in the last several years, but only lately, since the beginning of the last year, I have started to give it the necessary attention. Several weeks ago I had to make some minor improvements in one older page and I was a little ashamed… it was very poorly optimized for the search engines.

We are offering these services, but I am not going to convince you in any way to come to us… all I want is to give you some piece of advice: the web designing and the seo always work great together. The best pages are the ones that promote theirselves, in the matter of their content, how they looks (the design) and, the most important, their structure. The content and the design will make the people talk about the web page or the web application, but it will not bring it in the first 10 results of the search engines.

There still are companies and webdesigners that offer web development services and seo services, I know at least a few of them. It’s a good way to make some extra money from some clients that have no idea about what is a web page and how the search engines works: to create a web page with a minimum optimization on site and to offer that optimization as an auxiliary service. This works more often than you might think, but the client will always lose something: time, money or both.

So, when you decide to get a web site or a web application put the condition when picking up somebody to work on it: that the product must contain the basics or extended optimization for the search engines on site (integrated in the application).

WordPress and the HeadSpace2 plugin

Lately, in the past few weeks, I had to configure some wordpress blogs and to design some themes for them, they were a requirement for some clients as a easy-to-use script to complete the content of their page and to improve it’s ranking on the internet.

I don’t want to tell you about what powerful tool is wordpress, I believe the most of already know that… and if you don’t know it then find out now: some people say that wordpress rules and the are right. If you know what you want and you don’t need complicated stuff (like online stores with lots and lots of products and online payment or some good looking moving or flying things in flash) than wordpress is one of the best options for you. It’s great for blogging (that’s why it’s so well known – everybody can create a blog and start writing now) and for pages that has to present several things and that don’t something very expensive. If you know what you want when the designer starts to work on your wordpress blog you can have a good result in less than a day: the installation of the script, it’s configuration and the installation of the plugins, even the theme if you use one of the several existing tools on the market.

For the moment I want to stop and dedicate this entry to a specific plugin that’s a great tool for the search engine optimization part of the blog. The wordpress scripts come with some seo facilities but their beauty is that they can always be improved by using plugins, and everyone can create his/her own plugin and to install in on his/her blog (unless it’s on wordpress domain – it’s their domain, they make the rules, you can’t just any kind of plugins).

They say here about the HeadSpace (the subject of this article) that:

HeadSpace is a powerful all-in-one plugin to manage meta-data and to handle a wide range of SEO tasks. With it you can tag your posts, create custom titles and descriptions that improve your page ranking, change the theme or run disabled plugins on specific pages, and a whole lot more.

I am not going copy to from them the informations they are offering about the plugin or to repeat the most important parts of the text, they explain everything you need to know about it and how to start using it.

Consider my recommendation about this excellent script and use it. It’s a tool that you (almost) need and if you configure it in the right way it will improve the seo and the rank of your blog for sure.

Seo and webdesign: registering a domain and choosing a domain name

The hierarchical domain name system, organized...
Image via Wikipedia

Some of my seo works I did in the last months have proven every time that one’s presence on the internet does not start with his/her web page, the optimization of the site and all the content inside it. It starts with the name of one’s domain and it’s intended purpose. This article is about some tips about the importance of registering a domain and choosing the best name for it.

Register the domain as soon as possible.

Even if you don’t have the money and/or the time to get a web page you must register the domain as soon as possible. Now, if you can, or somebody else may register of himself/herself. You don’t need to have some hotshots specialist in marketing or web designing along to tell you what to do… just choose the best name and register. You don’t want to get the-domain-name-nobody-wants.com or some leftovers that may be what you want or not. Reserving the domain is the fastest part to create a business or a trademark over the internet.

Keep the name short

Some domain names can reach 67 characters but usually it’s difficult to memorize them and not all have enough patience to write all of them into their browser. So, keep the domain name as short as possible and have in mind that the people have to make a strong connection between the domain name and what it represents (what you want to sell or to promote on it).

If the name of the domain is your own trademark (your name, the name of something you belong or the name of your business) it is usually more important then the shortest and the best description of your activity. You should keep it.

Domain-name dot what?

It’s not uncommon to register more domains with similar names or domain names that complete the original name with auxiliary keywords. Some registrars even offer bonuses when you register more than one domain names and encourage the buyers to register the same name with different suffixes. For a long time the .com suffix was the first extension the most people try (access) when searches for a site and for some it will remain the most important. But, lately, a lot other suffixes (.net, .org, .tv, .eu, different countries TLDs, even the .xxx suffix for porn) became more and more wanted.

If you want company-name.com and company-name.org or company-name.net are not taken (for examples) you should register them also. They are not expensive, somewhere about 10 euros for an entire year/domain and they can be parked (redirected) on the original domain. The target is very important: you don’t need a China domain name if you your products are targeted to some small islands in the Mediterranean sea. But for just a few bucks you can cover all the possibilitiesall the targets you want. Some people even register the misspellings of their desired domain name just for that.

Anyway, try to find a domain name that has only one possible spelling and it’s very easy to type and it must be easy to remember. Most people are hard spellers and/or just lazy… choose your domain in such way for them to find you very quickly.

Commercial appeal (more or less)

One way to register a domain name is the commercial perspective: it’s just like a marketing campaign. If you want to sell/promote something then choose the best words to describe the product(s) and the shortest description. The internet is your billboard and you want to put your brand in everybody’s browsers and to sell lots and lots of products. And, of course, to get lots and lots of visitors (traffic).

More, if one or more keywords does not have commercial intent it does not mean you don’t want to optimize for them. The keywords in the name depend of the searches the users and if the not-so-commercial keywords gets you a lot of traffic it’s more than ok to include it in the domain name.

Avoid trademarked names

First of all, we have all heard about guys that thought ahead and bought some multi-million-euros-domains-names (companies names or product names, even movies titles). In the beginning the companies that released that names spent a lot of money to buy the domains from that smart guys, but lately the tendencies are to send the layers first to protect theirtrademarked brand. Usually they already spent lots and lots of money just to create and to develop that brands and it’s a lot easier to put to work the lawyers they already hired for various aspects of their businesses.

Type-In Traffic

Is when somebody access your site by simply typing the domain name in the URL bar in their browser and adding the suffix (usually .com, but not only that) at the end. If your domain name matches exactly with the keywords typed in the browser there is a chance to get some traffic from that.

Avoid the numeral substitution and slang

You can always add numerals into a domain name, but avoid substituting commons words with numeral (for example 4 instead for and 2 instead to) because it can create confusion and it’s hard to remember. From the same reason don’t use slang (for example u instead you). Also watch out for the numeral 0 because it is often mistaken for the letter O and viceversa.

Make your domain unique

The more unique domains (as design as domain name) are easier to remember. Search the all possible names for your domain and stick with the most unique one – it will stick and you can benefit from that for years (you can use for this the non-commercial keywords but important in the searches).

Hyphenates inside the domain names

The common sense and the habits say that the hyphenates should not be used inside the domain names: the people are not used with them in the URLs and the can easy misspell and can and up to nowhere or, worse, to the competitor’s site. More, when you tell somebody about a site about web design, software code and seo do you tell the to put hyphens like this (http://www.webdesign-software-code-seo.com/ ) or not? The most people don’t say it.

There are also some advantages to the hyphens inside the domain name: the search engines can distinguish your keywords better and thus return your site more close to the first results in search results and the non-hyphenated form may no longer be available.

Personally I prefer to put the hyphens in the name because I want to mark the keywords as clear as possibles. The humans can be educated to take them in consideration, it would be an improvement for most of them.

Plurals, “the” and “my” domain names

Very often the domain name registrar suggests alternate forms of the name you typed, especially when the domain you want is already taken. For example, if you wanted onlinestore.com the suggestions can look like this: theonlinestore.com. myonlinestore.com, onlinestores.com (and maybe some more) if they were not already taken as well.

If you really want some for of the chosen domain name than take it (or them if you want), but always remember to promote the full name of your domain (with the affix). You also must take in consideration that the plural can create confusion because a lot of people will forget to put the final s in the name.

Search for dropped domains

The dropped domains are these domains that have been changed from registered status to unregistered status. This usually happens because the registration renewal fee was not paid (the company went out of business or somebody just forget to pay). Anyway, in this case anybody can register the domain for himself/herself and to get an already know domain for the same price of a new one.

Domain auction

Believe it or not, there are auction for the internet domain names. It is a different method to get a domain for some price (it depends of the results of the auction). The problem is that you may also get the reputation of the domain, and that be bad or good.
